Brunel Johnson wins Portrait of Britain Award 2021

For the second year running, Brunel Johnson has won the prestigious Portrait of Britain award 2021: the UK’s biggest annual photography exhibition in collaboration with JCDecaux. Highly regarded and hand selected by a panel of industry-leading judges, this year’s work pushed the boundaries of portrait photography with a full b odied representation of the many facets of the British experience. Brunel’s winning photo joins a total of 100 stunning images documenting the richness of diversity that has built our modern society. Captured forever in moments preserved for future generations, both dynamic scenes and the subtleties of everyday life are explored. As viewers, we are invited to take a more considered look into the makeup of a country built on immigration and a multitude of cultures. Shooting on a casual day, Brunel took his camera for a trip to the courts in Finsbury Park, where he took photographs of the community there. Brunel says “The project was just me out with my Pentax 67 hoping to prove to myself that what I do on digital I can also replicate on film. The photo is one of my favourites from the series on Finsbury Park Basketball. Just happy to be winning with photos showing real Black culture.”
