Brutal Beauty

  • Matthew Spencer

My work is initially responding to the common misconception that Brutalist architecture is brutal or ugly and not appreciated. My project was made to change this view for people to show my appreciation. The purpose of this project is to create imagery that perfectly depicts themes of beauty or elegance along with maintaining the power of Brutalist architecture and the raw elements like the materials and appreciation of it. I want to at the same time create imagery that will shock the audience or viewer whether that be through the power or the architecture or the way its edited to create thought provoking imagery and ideas. I believed I achieved this perfectly with the use of digital manipulations to create abstracted images of Brutalism with my spiral imagery or kaleidoscopic imagery all inverted to highlight the strength but also beauty of the concrete and structures of these architectural monuments. I pushed the boundaries of how architecture can be captured to show its best features.
