Cabaret 1998

In my first year at university we had a collaboration project to interpret Joe Masteroff 1998's music drama Cabaret. The musical explores the dark and heavy life of Berlin while the Nazi are rising in power. My group and I based our concept on modern-day version set in Austin, Texas focusing around America and Trump. We wanted the Kit Kat club to be a safe haven for the LGBT community. I design and made the costume for the character Fraulein Kost. I also collaborated with make up artist Katherine Lindsey. Fraulein Kost is very comfortable within her body, sexuality and what she does; she is a prostitute. I was inspired by Austin, Texas festival and street style; this helped us select the colour palette which influenced our design development and final fabric choices. I used the skills I developed in a previous project on corsetry to emphasis her confidence by constructing a corset with a decorative bra design in a red denim fabric and shorts; with a kimono style robe in a paisley pattern; also cohesive in the corset design.
