Casa

  • Julia Jardim

Casa means home in Portuguese, the language in which I was first taught to speak and think. After almost a decade living abroad, the concept of home has changed wildly. At some point I learned to avoid the word as it started to mean "the thing that I once had and then lost". While I'm still trying to build a home outside of my first home, I'm amazed at how different people build their own lives inside their homes. I also find it interesting to see how houses impact the lives of those who live in them, shaping their routines, defining their rhythms, their dreams. In 2021 I started a personal project that began to take shape in my head almost 20 years ago, when I first saw a house being transformed by the arrival of a newborn baby. Even the light that hit the living room in the morning seemed to change to welcome the new life. The project is still ongoing and I want it to take its time, but each new family documented is a wonder to behold. All images shot on 35mm film. Dev and scan by Carmencita Film Lab
