The zine is about the 20 year old spacecraft explorer named Cassini, who had travelled through the solar system for years to eventually reach Saturn to study it’s rings, moons and planetary characteristics.
I wanted to evoke a sense of nostalgia, as this machine’s very long build time meant it was using 80’s and 90’s technology to record it’s data. I have followed it myself for most my life, and wanted to try give the explorer the appreciation it deserves.
One of the ways I created the retro aesthetic was to create the background images out of an amalgamation of vintage paper styles and old collaged photos from previous NASA missions. Found on NASA’s extensive online photo archive, the behind the scenes film photography gave my collaged illustrations an aged look.
