Catching Air - Documentary

  • Ruzele Strauss

Despite holding its world championships each August on a massive outdoor stage in Finland to 10K in-person fans and being broadcast and covered in the news around the world, competitive air guitar is still widely mocked. It’s seen as a frivolous pursuit by people with no talent who can’t play real instruments. The reality is quite different: From office workers to school mascots to art directors and actual musicians, the international air guitar community is a tight-knit, creative group of fun-loving people from all walks of lives. Catching Air is a documentary about those people—competitors who channel their own personal creativity through the purest form of rock n’ roll expression: playing the air guitar. Through multiple intersecting storylines, Catching Air follows a cast of memorable characters as the air guitar community gets them through the both the best—and toughest—times of their lives. We’re talking about true love and life-and-death situations here, people. It also follows the dreams of three veterans all vying for the U.S. title during one season, and tells the story of one musician’s unlikely and tradition-defying journey to winning the Air Guitar World Championships. Through showing their passion and dedication to this unusual craft, the filmmakers hope to inspire others' hidden creativity.
