CHOPSTICK STORIES X HONG KONG

  • Arjan Matteo Das

In 2015 I embarked on what was to be the most amazing adventure as a young design studentand the opportunity to go to the great metaphorical city of Hong Kong. I applied and was awarded asix month exchange programmeplacement at the Hong Kong Poly U Technical University to complete my minor in the Department of Environmental Design. What a culture shock this was! Before I knew it I was tenchopsticksdeep in the HK lifestyleand eating my noodles on the street corners and chilling in food courts just like all thelocals. During my long stay I lived in a hostel in the area“ShamShui Po”whichwas a bit of a rougharea, but the rent was cheap and I really wanted to put myself in the middle of all it.And believe me I saw some bizarrethings. like guys selling super-sizeTVsout the backsof vans and people gambling for money on the streets. I was fascinated by the culture and the way of life in HK. I started documenting my daily experiences and myfirst project was borncalled“CHOPSTICKSTORIES”. What I would do wastakephotos of the placeswhere I had my dinner and write down what I experienced:-the noise, the locals, the small talk, the chats with the employeesand if I was lucky enough I’d say“Hi”to the chef in the kitchen and thank him for the meal. I kept ondocumenting and I made a collection of street photography and films.
