Give Second Life To Packaging

Starting point
A trip to Berlin, Germany was organized for our class in the month of January 2017. The project started before we started the trip. in the first session, we were asked to choose a subject to research in Berlin. My subject was 'boxes for dry things'. Throughout the trip, we had to document our findings in a sketchbook.
Our final output would be a visual story of our experience.
Problem identified
During my research, it was difficult for me to define a design problem. My sketchbook was filling up with not so useful content. On my last day, I went to a stationery shop and bought the German-made Kaweco pen. The packaging design of the pen failed to impress me and gave me an idea for this project. Design a package for Kaweco pen.
Concept
My initial idea of package design was not impressive to my tutors. They questioned me on the uniqueness and visual relation of it to the city of Berlin. After a lot of consideration, I focused on another angle which could help me identify the visual connection with the city.
It is my hobby to collect postcards from the places I visit and during my trip, I collected a lot from Berlin too. I decided to combine postcard and packaging design together. The package could be torn into 2 postcards, which made it sustainable and a different product altogether.
Pattern and colour
Berlin is a creative hub for all the designers. The city is filled with inspiration. During the trip, we also had an amazing experience visiting Bauhaus art school. The pattern on the packaging is inspired by the architecture of the buildings in the city and the colours are from Bauhaus art school.
My entry, City Project, has been honored in the Core77 Design Awards 2017 in the Packaging category.
The jury chose my work out of hundreds of finalists for its outstanding execution, insight, creativity, and intent.
