Conscription

  • Henry Williams

"Conscription" is my sociopolitical short film that explores themes of fascism and corruption: A newly appointed Prime Minister, a manipulative and power-hungry leader, addresses the masses, promising job security and higher wages amidst a climate of uncertainty. However, the tides swiftly turn as the speech takes a dark turn towards fascism, revealing the Prime Minister's dictatorial inclinations. The announcement of conscription sparks outrage among the crowds, and amidst the chaos, the air fills with clashes, shouts, and violence. The Prime Minister, desperate to maintain control, abandons the stage, seeking refuge down an empty stairwell, disappearing from sight and from the masses pursuing him. I use a handheld visual style, unconventional angles and sound design to immerse the audience in the characters' subjective experiences and the unsettling power dynamics at play, offering a thought-provoking examination of unchecked power. Inspirations for this short stem from highly regarded films like 'Citizen Kane' and 'Dr. Strangelove' which masterfully depict the effects of political corruption Quarter Finalist at Serbest International Film Festival Written & Directed by Henry Williams Produced by Noir Street Films Sound Design by Callum Lau Colour Grade by Harry Shelton @ Unit
