Cultural Nostalgia

'Cultural Nostalgia.’ is a collaborative photo project we shot with the stylist Sabi Diez while traveling throughout Ghana. During this trip we had the opportunity to meet different people and ask them each the same five questions about their traditions, hobbies and more. Their responses served as inspiration for each photo set.

Mame Efua, Elmina – Mame Efua was cooking at the entrance of her house with her family when we met her. For Mame Efua family means everything, but her little girl is the joy in her life. Mame Efua believes being a mother is the best thing that will ever happen to her.
Yaw, Elmina – Yaw is from Elmina, a traditional fisherman village that really suffered from the rise of Colonialism in Ghana. His favorite color has always been red, symbolizing not only strength, but also representing the blood lost during the fight for the freedom in Ghana.
Nana Beyin, Kumasi –We met Nana Beyin in Kumasi where he was walking around the Palm Trees Farms. He told us he has always admired how people in Ghana adapt to find their way and to live a better life despite the difficulties of the country in terms of job & education.
Lomley, Accra – We met Lomley at her family house in Accra. She told us her name comes from the Akan tradition meaning “the third female born into the family.” She is greatful to have had a big family that has supported & helped her on her way to become what she wanted to be, a stylist.
Katie, Cape Coast – And finally, Katie, the smiley girl who was listening to music and dancing in the middle of the of the beach at Cape Coast without any worry of people looking at her. Her love for Ghanaian music is so strong that she doesn’t remember a day she hasn’t listened to it…
