What is the weight of a cup?
Due to the different densities of different ingredients, the number of grammes in one cup varies. One cup of flour is about 125 grammes. One cup of sugar is about 200 grammes. One cup of butter is about 227 grammes.
Cooking is a pastime and necessity to stay alive in this world. We must keep the taste of food intact by considering the weight and the quantity of the components. Some ingredients are by weight in Kilograms while in certain cooking recipes, the weight of the ingredients is mentioned in Pounds and ounces. To add the precise amount of ingredients in the particular dish, we must convert the Pounds to Kilograms.
Are you the type of person who sees the glass as half full or half empty? Hopefully, you're the former, because understanding how to cook with measuring cups is going to take some time, hope, and determination.
Often confused about cups
Since the 1960s, recipes rarely call for cups in the UK. If it's an old UK recipe, the imperial cup (284.131ml) will be used. This is a lot more than the metric cup (250ml), which is now used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the rest of the Commonwealth.
In the US, it's written as 236.59ml in recipes, but it's written as 240ml on nutrition labels. Are you with me? The mess starts even before you break an egg.
Because there are so many different types of cups, measuring in grammes is a much easier and more accurate way to cook. It also keeps your cake from turning out like a cross between a slab of concrete and a chocolate omelette. After all, baking can be a bit of a gamble depending on where your cups are from, how tightly you pack the ingredients in, and whether the top is piled high or flat. And cake is not something you want to mess up. Not while I'm in charge, brother.
We need to stick together as fellow bakers. So, we're being very nice and giving you some conversions from cups to grammes, which you can find below. These conversions are based on the US cup and assume that your ingredient is being spooned into the cup (236.588). For good measure, we've also included measurements for cups to ounces (pun intended).
1 cup of baking ingredients equals how many grammes
All-purpose flour 125 g 4.4 oz

201 g (7.1 oz) of granulated sugar
Powdered sugar 121 g 4.2 oz
195 g or 6.9 oz of brown sugar.
How to switch from cups to grammes
Let's look at how to convert cups to grammes so you can make a cake that would do well on the Bake Off.
To figure out how many grammes are in a recipe written in cups, you need to know what each ingredient is. A cup of ball bearings will be much heavier than a cup of feathers (though both make for delicious pancake toppings, my toothless cousin tells me). So, there is no single gramme equivalent for a cup. For example, 300g of salt is heavier than 60g of fresh breadcrumbs. It all depends on how dense the ingredient is.
To convert cups to grammes, multiply the number of cups by 236.588 and then by the density of the ingredient in grammes per millilitre. If your density is not in grammes per millilitre, you will need to convert it first.
grammes = cups 236.588 density (in g/ml or g/cm3) of ingredients
Here's an example of how to turn cups into grammes: (using a US cup).
Mabel wants to know how many grammes 3 cups of all-purpose flour is. She is making a Victoria Sponge cake. She finds that the weight of her all-purpose flour is 0.529 g/cm3. So, here's how she figured it out:
3 × 236.588 × 0.529 = 375.5 grammes.
You can use the tables below to help you convert your recipe ingredients from 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 cups to grammes or from grammes to 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 cups. Note that we also have other tools that can help you convert grammes to tablespoons, teaspoons, and millilitres.
