Curiosus // Diploma Project

  • Juliette Moreau
The Curiosus project was made from a simple yet recurring observation in our current society:Tattooing in black ink still has today a bad connotation.
Associated to a negative imagery since the 80s (as they were sported by punks and other hard rockers as a symbol of revolt) this stereotype of tattoos being a sign of disobedience is still well anchored in mentalities. Hence the problematics of this project were: How can we prove that the color black is not always associated to darkness in the tattooing world? How can we change the stereotypes gravitating around the black inked tattoos?
Branding : Highlighting the illustrative aspect through the use of a drawn element which comes to dress and tattoo the C alongside its very movement, glued to its skin like a tattoo. Font : “handlettering” style, written by hand to call to mind that tattooing stays before and foremost artisanal.
Baseline : « My instrument was not the black but that secret light coming from the black » Soulages
Quote from an artist (Soulages) using the black color as an elementary artistic principle forming a link between tattoos and art and making the former accessible to a new target. The words Black and Lights coexisting in the same sentence as an antithesis, in the same space, is Curiosus’ very principle. To use the black and magnify it with light.
