Dancing Queer by artist Shrouk El-Attar

  • Ellen Booth

I am currently working as the Creative Producer for Bristol based artist Shrouk. My role includes project management & development, building relationships with collaborators and venues, negotiating deals and fees. Alongside this, I am supporting Shrouk with development of future projects and a fundraising strategy. Shrouk belly dances in drag as a method of protesting her country’s treatment of LGBT+ people, where they are imprisoned and sectioned to mental health asylums. Their work as an emerging artist currently spans across three fields: activism, drag belly-dance performance and engineering. Their latest project project DANCING QUEER will bring each of these three aspects on their career and life into one artistic experience. With support from Arts Council England this piece will deliver a period of Research and Development across 2023 and 2024. Shrouk has performed all over the UK, Europe, and in countries as far as Japan and India. Her performance raises funds for LGBT+ campaigners in Egypt and was featured on many well-known media outlets like HuffPost, BBC, Reuters, Pink News, and Buzzfeed. They are currently Studio Resident at Pervasive Media Studio’s in Bristol. Find out more about Shrouk’s work here: https://www.shro.uk/dance
