David Holmes feat. Raven - Hope Is The Last Thing To Die (Remixes) - Heavenly Recordings. Imagine, if you will, a riotous clash between Chicago house, 60s girl groups and a touch of Nuggets-era psychedelia and you might be getting somewhere close to the sound of David Holmes’ latest single, ’Hope Is The Last Thing To Die’. It features singer Raven Violet, who fronted Unloved’s magnificent cover of the Ray Davies tune, ‘Strange Effect’ last year (which is currently being deployed as the theme for Nicole Kidman TV vehicle Nine Perfect Strangers). Remixer Daniel Avery retains much of the original flavour, with added Burroughs-ian vocal effects, driven by sharp-edged hi-hats and a bassline that comes in only one size: XL. Soundtrack composer and performance artist, DIE HEXEN, alongside collaborator Ruth Bate, turn in a maelstrom of a mix that retains the house drive while adding industrial attack that recalls Sheffield drop forges and Test Department.
