Decay

  • Shona Reilly

A short photography project in which I studied the decay of an abandoned train station in Portugal. Closed in 1944, the station was the end of the line for the residents of Laos, Algarve with the modern train staion just 100 meters behind it. The juxtaposition of old and abandoned, the state of decay both human and natural influence compared to the new, modern train station which allowed for modern footfall and distress. Experimenting with bleach, fire and erosion, some amazing photos came out from it. A main thread throughout the project was a desire to show the pieces with naturally, undirected forms of decay, meaning I had minimal influence in how much and where the photographs were deformed and mutilated much like natural forms of decay; mirroring that of natural decay.
