"Demons" - Mental Health Awareness Week Campaign

  • Nedzhatin Dzheman

The "Demons" project aims to create awareness of the importance of mental health because misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health issues make people suffer in silence and not seek treatment for their conditions. The inspiration for this project came from a quote from my favourite marvel universe Superhero Iron Man. In the Iron Man 3 (2013) opening scene, Tony Stark (Iron Man), in a monologue, says: " We create our own demons." This quote made me wonder who those "Demons" are. The idea of presenting mental health issues as mythical - half-human, half-animal creatures came from a novel titled "The physics of sorrow" (2011) by Georgi Gospodinov, where the author narrates labyrinths of different stories and timelines, including the myth of the Minotaur. This project allowed me to experiment with digital and 6x6 medium format analogue photography using the double exposure technique in Hasselblad 500 C/M.
