Diary (of a) Workshop

  • Stuart Heaney
This work was commissioned to document a workshop programme in diary filmmaking with Jonas Mekas. It was intended for young aspiring filmmakers with little to no experience of working with 16mm motion picture film. After conversations with Jonas, the students learned how to shoot and process 16mm film and then incorporated their film experiments with whatever handheld devices they had to hand to construct diary video productions of their own.
It was made using a hybrid of HD video and 16mm film (shot on a Bolex, the camera used by Mekas for nearly 40 years).
The workshop was developed as an educational component to the twin Jonas Mekas retrospectives at the BFI and the Serpentine Gallery in London. It was a partnership between BFI, Serpentine Gallery, University of the Arts, London and no.w.here (filmmakers collective that inherited the production elements of the London Filmmakers Cooperative, which Jonas helped to found).
Generously supported by iDailies lab.
