Difference between stainless steel sheets and stainless steel plate

  • Metal Supply Centre
The difference between stainless steel sheets and stainless steel plates is the thickness to which the metal is rolled out. Stainless steel plate generally has a thickness or gauge of more than 6mm and stainless steel sheet has a thickness of less than 6mm, but greater than that of foil. As a rule of thumb, the thinner the metal, the larger the gauge number will be.
Both stainless steel plate and sheet can be supplied in a dull or satin polished with a protective coating on one side. For a more decorative appearance, it can also be supplied with a circular finish.
Three of the most common grades of stainless steel are 304, 316 and 410. 304 and 304L are the most commonly used grade for sheet and plate as it is less expensive, highly versatile and offers corrosion resistance while also maintaining its durability. For coastal and marine environments, grade 316 is often favoured due to its superior corrosion resistance.
