Discourse Community - Life is Built on Words

  • Usua Perez Echegoyen
We use millions of words every day; we choose and use a different selection depending on with whom we are communicating. Each individual belongs simultaneously to several discourse communities. A discourse community is a group of people with common bonds that establishes a linkage group by word and discourse, both spoken and written, and a characteristic form of expression and in some cases exclusively.

Words are acquired by belonging to a discourse community and then added to our particular file. Glass containers with labels of different discourse communities fill a space almost completly, representing the many communities that exist. In the style of an old collector's cabinet, as if one were getting and keeping in his possession the letters forming the words in each community and adding them to their personal library.

This piece was exhibited in the contemporary art centre, El Matadero de Madrid, for the exhibition Typo_Mad_12 in October to November of 2012, organized by the Design Centre DIMAD.
