Distortion - Photography project, 2016

  • Pippa Leicester

As part of my Biological Photography module at university I created this project which explored distortion: a concept which manifests itself in what we consider as normality. As my first photography project, each photograph was given a criteria, which taught me to look out for and use specific photographic techniques. I tried to distort in different ways. Sometimes using the cameras own properties to change the veiw of the subject ie. lens type and focal length; then at other times the conditions in the photograph making the distortions ie. weather conditions creating shadows; or lastly, at times the subject itself in the image, seemingly unusual.

'Body Language'
The stunning striped pattern shadows really add to the drama of the photo, but I think also as they curve around the body they highlight the beauty of it's natural form.
'Telephoto Isolation'
Light refraction and dispersion through dew drops balanced on the pappus of a dandelion seedhead.
'Static movement'
Freezing a clashing moment between the morning light and the gushing water, thus creating a falsified reflection in the foreground.
'High ISO'
Fragments of light seeping through the blinds.
'Leading Lines'
Shadows alter the surface and draw us into the distant figure.
'Repeated Element'
Suspension of an oil droplet on water creating magnification and distortion of glistening fish scales, caught in the afternoon sun.
First photography project done and enjoyed... certainly many more to come!
