DIY Vertical wind turbine for disaster struck areas

  • Ioana Saioc

The team and I designed a ‘build your own wind turbine’ kit aimed at disaster struck areas such as the Philippines, which has been affected by 565 natural disasters since 1990. A further reason for the choice of context is the presence of many unofficial settlements in the country, places where intervention in case of disaster takes more time. In the slums of Manila, Philippines, it is common practice for people to search the landfills as a means of income. We saw this as a design opportunity. The DIY turbine would empower the people of the community to produce their own electricity while also benefitting the environment by reusing materials.
