The BBC’s ever popular sci-fi show Doctor Who was turning 50 in 2013. To mark the occasion, we were commissioned to design
and produce a homeware collection celebrating its longevity and appeal across all ages and genders.
Working alongside licensing specialists Skew, we researched, designed and manufactured a ceramic, textile and stationery range.
The challenge was to appeal to the fan (or ‘Whovian’) and non-fan simultaneously. Our consumer research told us that everyone in the UK was familiar with Doctor Who, even if they didn’t watch the show.
The concept was to treat the iconic imagery in a contemporary way, with the focus on attracting a design savvy audience that wouldn’t normally associate themselves with the show. The range was launched at a trade show aimed at high end gift and homeware stores and the result was a very well received collection, selling to a wide mix of retailers.
