Doja Cat; Chilled Out Sexy Vibes

  • Ell Shroff
Doja Cat is the embodiment of evocative progressiveness that the era of Trump is calling for. Treading a new path similar to those carved by Kehlani, Tove Lo and Niykee Heaton she is a young female artist who doesn't give a f*ck what you think. With songs named 'Wine Pon You', 'Cookie Jar' and 'Down Low' her self titled album 'Amala' takes you through a journey of sexual independence, maturity and confidence that is rare in the younger artists of 2018.
Conjuring up the most evocative and uncompromising soundscapes with her honeyed tones, 'Amala' is a never ending supply of chilled- out, sexy vibes, the anti-conformist project keeping feminism at it's core. Unapologetic in her verses and in her choices, 22 year old Doja Cat is a breathtaking new artist to listen out for. Taking her influences from PartyNextDoor and Erykah Badu, she balances sexual energy and artistic ability to create an effervescent character that is hard to dislike. 13 tracks make 'Amala', released earlier this year, the perfect length to contain Doja Cat's multiple idiosyncracies. Taking ownership of her body, her opinions and choices Doja Cat belies an inescapable frisky affection to everything life gives.
Of each of the tracks 'Morning Light'  projects self assurance to an indescribable degree. Doja Cat, secure in herself, acknowledges her man's freedom whilst simultaneously highlighting her worth. "Don't wanna waste your time, go ahead and live your life. I could be yours tonight, we'll be up till the morning light." The personal but similarly relatable messages within her tracks ring true to her reputation among fans as a fearlessly frank artist.
Owning her power as a female, the same way Niykee Heaton did with 'Bad Intentions', and Kehlani did with 'First Position' 'Body Language' depicts a casual arrangement perfect for Doja Cat. "Now it's the one to throw it back with it, Fitting all that he ain't gotta call back. We both get it in off free, we ain't afraid of sexuality." She satisfies a hunger we didn't know needed satiating, reminiscent of similar styles rife in 2014 but with a supplemental ingredient that mirrors the need in music and women today.
