Joy has long been synonymous with protest and across the world celebration and creative expression are used as tools to combat racial violence and process grief within black communities, black joy holds significant spiritual meaning, it is the place where radical self-care and resilience meet. Events like Notting Hill Carnival underline the importance of creating safe spaces for black people to experience freedom and expression without being censored or whitewashed. ‘Don't forget to celebrate’ consists of a series of images taken over a four-year span at Notting Hill Carnival, this ongoing body of work demonstrates the individuality and nuances of black British culture, serving as a reminder to us all to take time to reflect and rejoice.
