Don't Touch My Hair

A visual social media project produced to educate viewers on subconscious racist behaviours and the history behind them. It used visual, audio, and written media as well as opening a forum for discussion that was shared with others.

Inspiration to conduct this passion project came from years of frustration caused by people of all colours, crossing personal boundaries and touching my hair without permission. I then started researching and reading about the root of this act that is often seen as accidental or brushed off. Once I had so much knowledge, I was unable to hold on to it and decided to create sharable, digital content that would educate people about the history of touching Afro hair and why it may not always be seen as a compliment. This was a passion project that was heavily researched, planned and designed by myself to be engaging and educative for the intended audience. 

I chose to showcase my project on Instagram due to it being widely accessible and my connections with people of all colours and ages. Instagram stories tend to be for short form content that is easily readble and I felt that fit my goal, as I didnt want to make it too hard to be consumed. I included references at the end for readers to follow up and do their own research. Once published, I was contacted by dozens of readers who found the project informative, educational and eye opening.
