Dr John Cooper Clarke - The Punk Poet

  • Lola Stewart

Dr John Cooper Clarke emerged in the 1970's in the punk era and became known as 'The Punk Poet' with his unique style of writing and his trademark look. He still performs today and he is a relevant as ever and has collaborated with The Arctic Monkeys and Plan B for 'Ill Manors'. 'Dr John Cooper Clarke - The Punk Poet' is part of a series of illustrated poetry books released by Waterstones, with the aim to encourage 15-18 year olds to read more creative writing. The series includes a selection of award winning poets with a range of diverse styles of writing. I decided to create a fold out booklet of Clarke's poems, which have been illustrated from cut outs of magazines, photocopied and hand printed techniques inspired by the hand generated punk aesthetic; I have added a modern twist. The booklet can be read like a book and also fold out into a poster, one side with the poems and on the back an illustration of JCC and a quote from a poem. When folded out the booklet can be used as a poster. I also created a set of postcards with the name of the poem of one side and a quote from that poem on the back. The cards are perforated so you can tear them off an either send to a friend or display on your wall. They are packaged into a fold out box.
