Drive the evil away

  • Sibel Shakir
Inspired by the Ethiopia’s Surma people, this project explores the physical body as a canvas that reflects symbols of strength, power and beauty. The elaborate body decorations of Suri tribeswomen combines pain and beauty. Through the practice of scarification these people develop mental strength and resist to show suffering, a word that doesn’t exist in their language. In this piece intended for the field of Fashion, I combined the idea of the mystical Kukeri festival that is a traditional ritual intended to scare the evil spirits away. Those practices depict the body as a canvas of strong artistry.
