DUKTIG KNÅCKÅ (the translation may be a little dodgy)

This brief from IKEA Sweden focused on designing a product/service that would help consumers to reduce their water usage and fit in with the existing bathroom and kitchen range from IKEA. The brief allowed me the freedom to conduct some of my own user research into the water usage habits within both the bathroom and the kitchen to better narrow down the focus of the intended product. This research was conducted over a couple of months, exploring all facets of water usage within the home culminating in the ultimate focus of this project, this being reducing the over usage of water related to common everyday tasks in the home kitchen. The focus of this project was then narrowed down into the aim below: “To design and test a product/service that helps to reduce over-usage of water within the home kitchen”

The intended outcome of the project developed during the design process looking first into the gamification of water before progressing to the final concept of a tap that senses the product that is held in front of it allowing it to recommend certain volumes of water. This product allows consumers to quickly select the amount of water that they might require for the task at hand, which would then be filled into the vessel allowing the exact quantity of water used to be controlled preventing excess water from being wasted during these tasks. An example of this is in the filling of a pan of water, the product would recommend an amount based on previous data reducing the chances of consumers overfilling on specific tasks.

The final output of the project took the form of product drawings in the iconic IKEA style and an extensive user interface design layout mapping out all possible user interactions with the product.
Below is an example of the instruction manual produced in the IKEA style as to remain on brand and provide a simple user journey from purchasing through installation and finally to use.
