"Eliza"

Having always had a genuine admiration for the fashion in the black and white movies my graduate collection ‘ Eliza’ was inspired by the movie” My Fair Lady “ and in particular the Ascot Gavotte scene. Using the monochrome palette which is symbolic of this scene it is not only timelessly striking it also afforded me the opportunity to focus completely on the pattern, design, and the texture of my knitwear pieces. This offered me the freedom to experiment with multiple source materials such as ribbons, satin, silk and feathered yarn. I knitted these in to create layered and elegant embellishments that help emulate the circus like grandeur and luxury of that era. Inspired by fine art and sculpture I experimented with structure and shape so that my created garments reflect the nostalgia of the period. Moreover, as a nod to the flamboyance of the 1950s and particularly the Ascot attire, my designs have matching hats and embellishments which mirror the social status of the time the indulgence of the wealthy and the humour of the Ascot scene in the movie.
