Everton X Extreme.E: Re-imagining shirt sponsorship in football.

  • Richard Horsted

The head of NHS, Amanda Pritchard, has urged football clubs to rethink gambling sponsorship. That's after BBC News reported that 1,389 patients were referred for gambling support in 2022-23. Up massively from 775 just two years prior. The Big Step - a campaigning group aiming to end gambling advertising and sponsorship in football, added: "Football can't be trusted on gambling and the government must now step in to end these deals." In April, Premier League Clubs collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of their shirts by the end of the 25/26 season. However, clubs will still be able to continue featuring gambling brands on shirt sleeves and multiple other spaces, like LED screens. ‍♂️ So, rather than go half in, should clubs see this as a moment to go all out on green sponsorships of the future? Henry Staelens, ex-CEO of Forest Green Rovers has highlighted the commercial opportunity; "Businesses who invest time and resources in going green are only going to benefit financially. Our partnership revenue has grown by five times in the last three years." At Climate Clubs, we've launched a series exploring what these link ups of the future could look like. After our first West Ham X Patagonia tie up, it’s now time for the second. A collaboration with our talented friends at Hey Big Man! and The Goal Hanger to imagine a fusion of Everton and Extreme.E.
