Art In Brighton Radio Show

  • Christopher Spring

A bi-weekly show on 1BTN talking about all of the best Art [and music] in and around Brighton, broadcast live.

As part of my blog Art In Brighton I kept abreast with all of the hottest bands and art show in Brighton. This included exclusive sessions and interviews with some of the best galleries/bands.
Below are just a few of my favourite shows:
This show included an old interview with one of my favourite hip hop artists Sampa The Great. After really discovering the power of lyrics in songs I became mildly obsessed with it and wanted to create a show that really celebrated them. This included a section where I read the lyrics as poetry first and then played the song, showcasing the changes in rhythm, the natural melody of the words and then how the two interact.
For this show I had the artistic director of the Lighthouse Gallery Alli Bedoes in. She talked about a project that involved grime artists and the Large Hadron Collider in CERN and how important art is to science and vice versa. She talks about Lighthouse the upcoming projects in Brighton and beyond and also about her new vision for the gallery, as well as talking about the wider future of the arts and how to fund them.
For this exclusive show I invited Anne Rupert, business manager for Fabrica Gallery to come in and talk about the #KeepFabrica campaign. For those of you not in the know, Fabrica is the largest gallery space in central Brighton and is key in championing the local arts. Unfortunately due to a cut in funding they were under threat and started a crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to keep it open. They were successful but we discussed many interesting topics with the future of the arts again at the centre of the discussion.
Curated and hosted a "best of" The Great Escape Festival 2017 with guests including Laurie from Slaves (the headliners of The Great Escape no less) to come in and talk live. This was a huge challenge for me as it was the first time I really decided that I wanted to work in music and wanted to make the most of some of the best artists in the music industry coming to my city.

As an extra personal challenge it was one of the first times I had left the house since suffering from a major mental breakdown. For what it was I am delighted with the results.

Blurb below:

This special show is Chris' (of Art In Brighton and PRBH Radio) co-hosted by Hollie Rowland picks of The Great Escape 2017. With very special guest and headliner Slaves came in to talk about The Great Escape, their music, influences and art projects on the side. All of us run through our favourite songs of this year, how to find your way and (with the help of Spotify) hopefully entertain your ear holes.

Also featuring short interviews with Adam Naas, Sampa The Great, FIL BO RIVA, ELIZABETE BALČUS, Weirds, Kudu Blue, Yonaka and Zeal & Ardor.

As broadcast on 1 Brighton FM (101.4FM, Online and on DAB) on the 16th May from 9pm. One Love, One Community:
