FAIK

  • James Wilson

Filmmaker Adam Curtis asserted that “self-expression is the conformity of our time”. FAIK uses Machine Learning to remove as much human bias and preferences as possible from the creative process. In this instance it is designing a collection of clothes in the style of famous fashion houses. The aim was to create without conforming. The project also examines the blurred lines between what we see as ‘fake’ and ‘original’. The pieces tread a grey area between forgery, homage, and also the possibility of a complete 180-degree turn into an original design. The resulting “collaboration” with AI produces a collection of designs that would not be possible with only human input. There are also elements that connect each design to the designer or brand that it is attempting to imitate.

GAN Image Generation Process:

The first image the GAN created followed by subsequent others till the final image. The process used around 30 images for each design.

The use of the GAN as the creator removes the “self-expression” of the human and gives a result which does not conform.
