Fashion Futures

  • Rebecca Mann

Animals have a place in our society, is that place with fashion? Ethically speaking, no but animal bi-products such as leather and fur have been used in fashion for years, seen as a luxury and a symbol of economic status, with the increasing popularity in society of a plant-based diet and awareness of sustainability, I will explore how the luxury market will evolve to adjust to these new lifestyles. The rising importance of sustainability has become one the largest talked about topics in fashion over the last few years and thus will definitely increase in the future, with more sustainable practises being introduced to the luxury market. Mass consumption needs to slow whether that be in fast fashion or fast food, we need to slow down our industries and make them more circular, making sure clothing produced can, at the end of its lifecycle can easily be recycled into another form. In this essay I will explore the future implications of veganism within the luxury fashion market, discuss the for and against argument of using a faux leather or real leather and link this back to sustainability and also explore the potential solution to the environmental crisis of fashion of a slow fashion movement,. I want to look in to what the future looks like for these industries, could veganism be a passing-trend, or will we globally have to prepared for a complete shift in our society.
