The number eleven has always felt paradoxical to me.

Visually uniform, and often symmetrical; yet numerically off centre and non-divisible.

The tension between these traits feels perfectly representative of type design as a practice - a craft that is built on rules and best practice, yet often abandoned in favour of arbitrary optical corrections.⠀

‘A mess of elevens’ is designed to convey this contradiction.

Using pop-culture references, brands, conspiracy theories, and divergent styles – together they represent my current mental state when approaching our work. Wanting to stay relevant, battling software restrictions, resisting the need for social affirmation...

It was a cathartic piece. I’m proud of how it came out and let’s be honest, who didn’t feel a little like this at some point during 2020?⠀
