'Feeling Blue' Picture Book

  • Ellie Ross-Wilkinson

Throughout my final year of university, blue has been the main focus of my studies, both in project and dissertation. Research highlights blue to be highly versatile with many associations, resulting in blue being one of the world’s most popular colours, as well as my own. This recognition has inspired my journey to create the picture book ‘Feeling Blue’, a story that demonstrates these associations to a young audience, through the eyes of a blue protagonist. The project focuses around the understanding of blue and sadness, then explores blue’s relationship with other colours, enabling the reader to recognise positive interpretations of joy, cool and calm. Throughout the process of creating this book, I have utilized physical and digital collage alongside digital print and traditional book binding techniques. The book also includes fold out elements in the most climactic part of the story. This engages the reader, highlighting the extreme contrast between red's energy and blue's calm.
