Figment

  • Anya Sims

My graduate collection Figment, explores the psychological impact and aesthetic value of fashion through the juxtaposition of fantasy and functionality. I wanted to understand what society can gain from the overconsumption of fashion, when the volume of garments is no longer necessary or functional. The negative implications of overconsumption are well known but I wanted to explore the positive psychological impact of notions of fantasy, escapism and beauty. My love of colour, texture and absurdity are combined to reveal a beautiful but humorous portrayal of the sometimes necessity of beauty and lack of necessity of function.Sustainability is at the heart of my practice so I have developed my own textiles which reuse oddments, offcuts and second hand wedding decor to reinvent our understanding of sustainable fashion aesthetic. These textiles come through in elements of knitwear, embroidery and unique seam details featured throughout the 6 outfit collection.
