For my final major project, I have focused on public spaces within Nottingham to develop a more welcoming and exciting vision. From my awareness of homelessness within Nottingham, I have been driven to design FOR the people rather than AGAINST. “When you’re designed against, you know it... Other people might not see it, but you will. The message is clear: you are not a member of the public, at least not of the public that is welcome here.” The same is true of all defensive architecture. The psychological effect is devastating." (Howell, O., The Guardian 2018) Visual research of textural surfaces and architectural structures have enabled me to use an eclectic mix of materials and develop an atmospheric colour palette. Natural forms and patterns have also been incorporated within my collections, which have helped me develop the more welcoming aspect, contrasting with the cold, dark and harsh original cityscape. My dissertation research has also supported my visual development, focusing on the supremacy of light within architecture and design, this has benefitted how I can use light as a medium in my own work. To reinforce the large scale architectural focus, I have worked in a very multi-media approach, exploring techniques including laser cutting, digital embroidery, glass, ceramics and concrete. Conceptual research was taken from installation, architecture, surface, sculpture and textiles. Check out my online portfolio for more project development at: https://shsdesigns.myportfolio.com/.
