Final Major Project: Handcrafted Roots

  • Hannah Fry
The project is based on celebrating traditional craftsmanship in a contemporary context. Handcrafted Roots explores artisanal weaving techniques and sustainability, putting emphasis on the benefits of slow living and slow textiles. The project specifically finds design inspiration from organic colours and formations found in woodland landscapes.
The collection of highly textured, Autumn/Winter womenswear fabrics is an exploration of tactile forms found in nature. Woven outcomes are inspired by my own photography and artworks of compositions made with fibrous foraged forms. Experimental weave structures are combined with a conscious use of natural fibres and natural dyes in warm, earthy tones. Daring and fibrous yarn choices are selected to convey exciting surface textures and 3D qualities. Designed with the artistic, free spirited and yet sophisticated consumer in mind; the overall feel of the collection centres around handwoven and handspun looks, warm natural hues and artisanal techniques, with a suggestion of bohemian spirit.
