Flags of the estate - World Cup 2018

  • Mari Shibata
Residents in a London estate covered with over 300 England flags watch football tournaments with their immigrant neighbours.
A portrait of the World Cup with timeless values of identity, diversity and friendship, this short observational documentary zooms in on 10-year-old Ashley caught between supporting her Colombian roots and English upbringing.
The footage was originally filmed for a social media assignment by a digital Chinese publisher, for whom I covered stories during the World Cup following England's success to the semi-final from London.
Due to the amount of material gained, I decided to do a Director's Cut as I had witnessed something much more inclusive than my personal experiences as a football fan with cross-cultural experiences. The friendship between young female football fans was unique something I didn't get to experience, back in my childhood years when I played the sport with boys!
