Fragile Surroundings: Sea Sovereign

  • Indigo Macey

‘The Sea Sovereign’, has been created with the context of representing how we take the essence of the sea and domesticate it in our homes, especially bathrooms and aquariums. As well as the unacceptable rate of mass fishing, destruction of coral reefs, whaling and pollution of our seas. This series is to be part of the ‘Fragile Surroundings’ collection, showing the fragile relationship between humans and the environment. The concept of sirens and mermaids fascinated me from a young age, I always felt empowered by them which is what inspired me to use the idea in my shoot. This shoot has been used to represent the incredible beauty and life that belongs in our seas, in the form of the mermaid, and how it is taken and trapped in domesticated life for human gratification. I tried to make the mood very detailed and editorial, but to have this continuous sense of longing from the mermaid to return to the sea instead of being stuck in this bathtub.
