When I first set up as a freelancer I had one problem... I didn't own the rights to anything I previously shot. Therefore I had no showreel to show anybody. Strangely enough this allowed me the opportunity to do something I had always wanted to do... How could I showcase my product when I had no footage to showcase? I couldn't go out and film more footage to build a showreel, that would take far too much time. But to be thoroughly honest, commercially speaking, I didn't want a showreel. They're long, boring, generic and ultimately everyone has one... Seeing this only encouraged me to do what I had in mind. Why not show my clients what I could do for them, but for me?! Film a commercial of myself showing my clients something they could have, instead of making them watch through a bunch of mundane "cinematic" footage that has zero commercial appeal. So one evening, script in hand, I decided to pop out to the local field, of which permissions were granted (always), before sundown. I set up my camera for a single, well composed, frame and got to work... Needless to say, this video still heads up my homepage. I have masses of content to create a showreel. However, to this day, I get clients coming to me because this video was "different" and they wanted something fresh too It goes to show, if something has been thought out well, it doesn't need to be fancy.
