A collaboration between alt-R&B singer-songwriter Mahalia and contemporary choreographer Jamaal Burkmar (Extended Play), directed by filmmaker Dan Löwenstein for V&A Friday Late. The work is part of a series in which the siblings explore the innate relationship between music and dance, playing with music that is traditionally not used in contemporary dance compositions. In the film, which was shot in the empty museum, Mahalia reimagines four tracks from her discography – Simmer, I Wish I Missed My Ex, Karma and Sober. She performs these tracks live and acapella with four dancers from Jamaal’s company Extended Play, who experiment with a movement language that aligns with R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul and funk.
