Friends of the Earth T-shirt Design

  • Geo Law

I was asked by charity organisation Friends of the Earth to piece together a t-shirt graphic that responds to my thoughts on the future of the environment once the Covid-19 global pandemic is under control. The t-shirt design would be part of a special collection called "Greener Future" curated by Friends of the Earth with other illustrators and their response to the brief. You can see them here. My response was that I hoped there would be a clear indication that we need cleaner air there would be more of an impetus to look into sustaining more forests and to look at cleaning up the air as a whole. I liked this Globe character I thought of and wanted to play with different variations of ideas. In the end I liked the look of the character stomping forward with gusto getting ready to plant a tree for future generations. https://shop.friendsoftheearth.uk/product/george-law-circular-t-shirt/

Earlier iterations of the idea included the Globe in various poses and situations. I liked the initial idea of inner peace and fresh air and looked at a typographic approach with bubble writing. I decided against the use of words other than the "Friends of the Earth" logo as I wanted the design to visually appeal and give an ambiguity to the design. First and foremost I believe with t-shirt design you need the graphic to be striking and eye catching so I had this in mind when going through my various ideas.
