From a Distance - Katarzyna Wiktorski

  • Katarzyna Wiktorski

Since producing and independently releasing two singles made in isolation (Sudden Limbo and Search for Stillness), Kat was determined to further overcome the constraints of lockdown and persevered to make an ambitious four-track debut EP of original music. Featuring previously unrecorded, unreleased pieces, Kat produced and directed her team of seven to record each layer of instrumentation to build the tracks. Beginning in late August, Kat reviewed and updated the arrangements of chosen pieces; Gratitude, From a Distance and Pique & Peace, along with completing the final stages of a new composition The Warming (which has never been physically played together). Each musician recorded their parts at home during lockdown across Melbourne, between September - November 2020. Fusing an unconventional string quartet with a jazz quartet, Kat’s pieces are influenced by classical, jazz, film music and contemporary sensibilities. Her music explores light and dark landscapes, drawing from personal experiences that create an emotional, ornate listening experience. This album reflects on the complexities of displacement, unbelonging, anger, dysfunction, grief, gratitude, hope, love and more.
