Ganz schön anders | Pretty different

  • Andy Machals
“Ganz schön anders” is the revival of the 2012-variant of the same show and was again performed by 200 kids (100 kids in each cast) between the age of 7 and 17. The kids, taking on roles as soloists, singers, and dancers, are trained at the Friedrichstadt-Palast and perform the show about 40 times around the holiday season.

The Friedrichstadt-Palast is a revue theatre in the heart of the city. Today, it produces some of the largest ensuite-shows in the Western world with more that 100 dancers, singers and acrobats performing every night. The main stage covers 2,200 square meters and houses a water basin, several podiums, top-notch lighting equipment and the latest LED and projection tech.

The production took place alongside with THE WYLD, the Friedrichstadt-Palast’s newest oeuvre in show entertainment, written and directed by Manfred Thierry Mugler and Roland Welke.

- Assisting the director in designing, producing and staging of the show during the pre-production and rehearsal period.
- Responsible for the creative production and technological appropriation of an existing play into the set design of the theatre’s grand show THE WYLD (set design by Jürgen Schmidt-André; art direction by Thierry Manfred Mugler; see images above).
- Collaboratively devised the staging of show with a focus on creating show moments and exploring space with a relation to time (spatio-temporal dramaturgy).
- Devising and designing the mechanics of the visual worlds (incl. transitions) for each scene. Subsequently, these were animated by the video content designer in a 4k resolution to be back projected into the cyclorama and adjacent LED panels.
- Devising and planning the magical staircase variants for “Ganz schön anders”.
- Styling the lighting design and reacting to design challenges in the interplay of stage and lighting design, in close collaboration with the theatre's light designers and the show's director.
- Improved the creative production processes by keeping a tight management of all creative processes.
- Overlooking their creative and timely implementation by spanning all trades of the theatre (creative direction, creative production management, stage tech direction, lighting designers, head of automation, stage management, stage crew) and external creative service providers (crafts men, video designers).
- Planning and documenting of the rehearsals and their subsequent evaluation with the respective trades of the theatre, especially lighting and stage tech.
