Goliath - Modern Villains EP

I was fortunate enough to be asked to design the artwork for Modern Villain's new singles. These designs were to be used for Spotify. This meant I had to consider the size of the icons for these singles as well as having the story behind the song be notable in the design.

The first is the artwork for 'Goliath'. When speaking to the musicians behind this piece it was clear that masculinity was an important theme in the song. Will Dixon, the lyricist explained;
"It's about toxic masculinity, men thinking they need to be tough and emotionally closed off in order to be "real men" when in reality the only thing you need is to identify as male. The 'Goliath' is the man who's taken the idea to its absurd extreme, projecting themselves as impossibly big, with this being their identity and reputation."
After discussing the meaning behind the song with Will I decided to explore the biblical name for the song. The story of Goliath (c. 11th century BC), a Philistine giant, decides to wage war against Saul. Every day he offers to end the war in single combat. Only David provides a response. Armed by only a sling and pebbles David beats Goliath and achieves renown. The Philistines retreat after the loss of their champion and the war is won.
The idea that something as small as a pebble could defeat something mighty was what stood out to me in this story and so I wanted to focus on that imagery and keep it very simple.
