Graduate Collection - Of Native Land

  • Olive Grover

Textile Design, Mixed Media Graduate collection inspired by the rugged romance of rural dwelling, and the foragers, the workers, the wild dyers and the wanderers. Shapes and fabric manipulation techniques inspired by the processes and tools these rural dwellers may need, or the ways in which they might utilise their garments and the spaces around them. For example, quilting is used to create pocket spaces to store found objects, plants, herbs, and tools the wanderer and forager may find. Fastenings are created from found objects. Natural dyes used and dye matter found through my own foraging, dye recipes stitched into antique, dyed silks as potions - the lucky charms of the wild dyer. Pleating, smocking, and traditional methods of fabric manipulation are used, inspired by and emulating 17/18th Century Shepherd's smocks. All fabrics naturally dyed and all pieces hand-crafted and hand-stitched and embroidered. Sustainable, ethical, concept driven - traditional techniques used for contemporary ideas.
