Hackney Council Festive Illustrated Map

  • Olivia Brotheridge

Hackney Council Share an Eco Message for Christmas 2019. I created this map of Hackney, capturing the spirit of the neighbourhood and community amongst iconic landmarks and leafy trees. The greenery symbolises the council's initiative to plant 6,000 new trees in the borough by 2022. The map appears on large posters on JC Decaux street furniture, and across social media platforms. It also features on 500 Christmas cards sent out by Hackney Council and Mayor Phillip Glanville, printed on FSC certified sustainable paper. I hope people will see the landmarks and think of the experiences they have connected with those locations. I lived in Hackney for 5 years, so my memories are woven into this map. The illustration started life as a pencil sketch, before being scanned and coloured on an iPad. The final piece was then turned into a vector image for large-scale printing. A summer version is also on its way, so keep an eye out across the borough next year too! "Can't thank you enough an inspiring and beautiful design that captures Hackney perfectly." - Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney
