Hair Goes Nothing

  • Megan Pilcher-King

Hair loss is an extremely emotional and distressing experience and something so many people fighting cancer have to face. It can make people embarrassed and want to hide away. Sadly, when given the diagnosis of cancer it is common for friends to disappear or ‘go off the grid’ as they are uncertain how to deal with the situation. People may stop calling or visiting as they don’t know what to say. I know from experience that hair loss as a result of chemotherapy visually reinforces the reality of the diagnosis to not only the person experiencing cancer but to surrounding loved ones as well. The idea for this project is to create a wearable ‘headpiece’ to give someone their confidence back, bringing them back into the room. It's about being seen as more than a diagnosis. A workshop was hosted so participants could make their own headpieces and reflect on how they would want to be seen if they had lost their hair.
