The Tripitaka Koreana is the world’s oldest version of Buddhist scriptures written in Hanja script. These scriptures are central to the cultural heritage of Korea, and to me as a Korean. The Tripitaka characters are carved from wooden blocks and used to decorate the body with ink. Inspired by this principle, these characters are embedded as a design feature in the heel of my footwear, using the consonant of my last name. Other personalised motifs are secretly hidden: my name is engraved using laser cutting on the outer sole. By contrast, the shoe’s upper is designed with simplicity in mind.
